Detailed Itinerary of 4 Days Congo Gorilla Trek and Nyirangongo Volcano Hike

Day 1: Pick up, city tour and transfer to Congo

Upon arrival at Kigali International park or after breakfast at your hotel in Kigali City, you will be picked up by your safari driver guide – our company representative, he will give you a short safari briefing about the safari and what to expect then head to Kigali city for a tour.

During the city tour, you will visit the genocide center in Kigali where you will learn about the horrific Kigali genocide, visit the local markets and craft shops where you can purchase hand craft materials. You will have lunch and then embark on a journey to Congo on a drive of approximately 3-4 hours crossing the Congo – Rwanda border, on the drive you will enjoy the magnificent landscape sceneries and the hilly landscape. When you arrive at the Congo border, you will clear with the authorities and proceed to your lodge, have dinner and stay overnight.

Meal plan: lunch and dinner

Day 2: Gorilla trekking in Virunga National Park
wakes up early for breakfast and be driven to the Bukima Park station in Virunga national park for a briefing session, with your packed lunch you will join other trekkers at 07:00 am, be grouped into 8 and trek into the jungle looking for mountain gorillas.

The trekking takes approximately 3-6 hours depending on the movement of the gorillas and where they spent the previous night, while in the forests you will have a chance to see other forests creatures such as monkeys and many birds.

When you find the gorillas, you are allowed to stay in their presence for one hour while learning more about their characteristics which are similar to humans and watch them go on with their daily lives, mothers take care of their young ones, silverbacks protecting their families. You are allowed to take pictures as long as your flashlight is off.

After the experience, you will trek back to the park’s headquarters and then head to your lodge for an evening of rest, have dinner and stay overnight.

Day 3: Hike the Nyiragongo Volcano

After breakfast, you will drive to Kibati Patrol station in Nyirangongo Volcano for briefing about climbing this beautiful volcano which is conducted by park rangers, you will hire porters and then start on the hike heading to the top of the Nyirangongo Volcano. The hike takes approximately 4-6 hours and during this hike you will enjoy magnificent views, spot rare bird species and animals. On reaching the peak of the volcano, you will enjoy magnificent views of the boiling lava in the crater on top of the volcano. You will spend the night in tents on top of the volcano on the edge of the crater.

Day 4: Descend from Nyiragongo Volcano and transfer to Kigali

After breakfast, you will descend the volcano heading to Kibati Patrol Post. When you arrive you will at the post, you will meet your guide and after lunch you will embark on a drive back to Rwanda’s Kigali city where you will be dropped off either at the hotel or at the airport for your departure flight back home.
