This 5-day safari in Rwanda offers visitors the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to take a game drive through Akagera National Park in Northeastern Rwanda, track endangered mountain gorillas, and visit golden monkeys in Volcanoes National Park.

Detailed itinerary of 5 Days Rwanda Gorilla and Akagera Wildlife Safari

Day 1:  Pickup in Kigali and transfer Akagera National Park and have a game Drive

Upon arrival in Kigali at Kigali International airport, you will be warmly welcomed by our representative and after a short briefing about the safari and what to expect, you will embark on a transfer to Akagera national park which is a drive of about 2.5 hours.

Along the way you will enjoy the magical views of the winding roads and the mountain scenery as it opens up into flatlands as you head to your lodge, after checking into your lodge and refreshing. You will head to the park for an afternoon game drive in the savannah plains of Akagera, on the game drive you will enjoy spotting animals such as lions, leopards, elephants, cape buffaloes, elands, giraffes among others. In the evening you will head back to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Morning game drive and transfer to Volcanoes National Park

After breakfast, you will head to the park for a morning game drive, during the morning hours it is not yet warm and the chances of seeing the predators such as lions, leopards and hyenas on the hunt are high.  You will also have a chance to watch other animals and various bird species, then head back to your lodge for lunch. In the afternoon you will exit the park and embark on a journey to Volcanoes national park a home to Mountain gorillas.

The drive is approximately 2.5 hours through winding roads and look forward to enjoying the mountain scenery, arrive in the park in evening, check into your lodge and rest for the evening.

Alternatively, you can go for a village walk in the colorful and rustic local villages situated along the borders off the park. during the visit you will enjoy the warm welcome and hospitality of the local people, their simplicity and richness of the local lifestyle.

Destination: Volcanoes National Park

Day 3: Gorilla Trekking and visit the Ibylwacu Cultural Centre

After early breakfast, you will head to the park’s headquarters for briefing about gorilla trekking, be grouped into groups of 8 people and then trek into the jungle looking for mountain gorillas. Gorilla trekking takes approximately 2-6 hours depending on the movement of the gorillas and where they spent their previous night. This activity is headed by a ranger guide who is in contact with other rangers who left earlier looking for the location of the gorillas.

When you find the gorillas, you will stay for one hour while watching the gorillas play on tree branches, pick fruits which they eat, watch female gorillas attend to their child among others. You are also allowed to take pictures as long as your flashlight is off so as not to irritate the gorilla, after the experience you will head back to your lodge for lunch.

In the afternoon you will go for a visit to the Iby’Iwacu cultural center in Kinigi where you will enjoy performance of native dance and music by drummers and dancers, witness the traditional ceremony recreated by local performers. In the evening, you will head back to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 4: Golden Monkey Tracking and visit Musanze Caves

Enjoy early breakfast and return to the park’s headquarters for a golden monkey tracking experience, you will be briefed about the experience and then hike into the forests looking living in the bamboo vegetation/ Forest near the base of the mountain.

When you find the golden monkeys you will enjoy observing the golden monkeys, take amazing pictures and you are free to ask as many questions as possible. Afterwards you will head back to your lodge for lunch, in the afternoon you will transfer to Musanze Caves for a visit. Musanze caves is a long cave extending more than 2 kilometers and it is accessed and explored using several trails , with the help of flashlights you will explore the caves – the long lost homes of the local people. Return to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 5: Return to Kigali

After breakfast, you will checkout of your lodge and embark on a journey back to Kigali  and long the way you will enjoy scenic views of banana farms, tea plantations and small towns in western Rwanda  along the winding roads.

When you arrive in Kigali you wll have a short city tour visiting the Genocide Meorial Center and local handcraft market to purchase some of the beautiful artwork in the city. Then you will be dropped off either at the hotel or at airport for your departure flight back home.
